How to use SongChute · Part 3 of 10

Transpose, capo and the view that fits any tablet

October 17, 2026 · 2 min read

A chart is only useful if you can read it while you play. SongChute is built around one idea: the whole song should fit your screen, with no scrolling in the middle of a verse.

Columns that fit the song

Open any song and look at the controls above the chart:

  • Auto picks one, two or three columns so the song fits the screen. This is the default and usually the right choice.
  • 1, 2 or 3 forces a number of columns if you prefer.
  • A− and A+ make the text smaller or larger. SongChute remembers your choice for each kind of device, so your phone and your tablet can each have their own size.

Turn your tablet sideways and the song re-fits.

Transpose in one tap

Singer wants it lower? Use − and + to move the song down or up a half step at a time, or pick a key from the Key list. Every chord changes, and the chords stay right above the words where they belong.

Your transpose is personal. It changes your view only, so your bandmates still see the song in their own key.

Capo without the maths

Choose a capo from the Capo list. SongChute shows:

  • The shapes you play with the capo on.
  • The key the song sounds in.
  • Capo help, which lists the real chords for each section, for anyone in the band playing without a capo.

Chart, Tab and Arrangement

Every song has three views, one tap apart:

  • Chart: the chords and words.
  • Tab: riffs and solos, if the song has any (a green dot on the Tab button tells you there is tab).
  • Arrangement: the order of the song, like Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Solo, Chorus, Outro, so the whole band knows the road map.

Lyrics only

Singing and not playing? Switch Chords on to Lyrics only for a clean lyric sheet in a bigger size.

In Part 4 we put this to work and learn a batch of new songs with study sets.
