Privacy Policy

This policy explains what SongChute collects, why, and the choices you have. SongChute is based in Ontario, Canada, and handles personal information in line with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

What we collect

• Account details: your name, email address and password (stored scrambled, never in plain text).
• Your content: the songs, charts, notes, set lists, gigs, links and files you add, and who you share them with.
• Sign-up and security information: the IP address you sign up from and its approximate location (country, region and city), worked out from the IP address. We do not use your device's GPS.
• Usage information: basic technical logs such as pages requested, times, browser type and errors, kept to run and secure the service.
• Plan details: your plan, billing period and currency. When online payments are added, card details will be handled by our payment provider; we will not store your card number.

How we use it

• To run SongChute: store your content, show it to you and the people you share it with, and keep your account working.
• To keep SongChute safe: prevent fake and automated sign-ups, limit sign-ups to the countries we serve (currently Canada and the United States), detect spam and abuse, and act on reports.
• To communicate with you: account emails such as verification, band invitations and important changes. We do not sell your information or send you advertising emails without your consent.

Review of content

To enforce our Terms of Service, automated checks look for signs of spam, scams and abuse (for example links to outside sites, contact details, and certain words). Our team may view your content, including content shared only with your band, when it is flagged by these checks, reported by someone, or when we need to in order to keep SongChute safe or comply with the law. Access is limited to the people who run SongChute.

Reports

If you report content or a person, we keep your report, who sent it and what it is about so we can act on it. We do not tell the person who reported them.

Who we share it with

• Your bandmates: only what you share with them.
• Service providers who help us run SongChute (hosting, email delivery, location lookup, and payments once added), under agreements to protect it. Some may store data outside Canada, including in the United States.
• Authorities when required by law, or to protect someone's safety.

Location lookups

We work out an approximate location from your IP address using Cloudflare and/or the MaxMind GeoLite2 database. This includes GeoLite2 data created by MaxMind, available from maxmind.com.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while your account is open. Accounts that never verify their email are deleted after 7 days. When you delete your account, your content and account details are removed, apart from records we must keep by law (such as billing records) and backups, which are overwritten within a limited time. Security logs are kept for up to 12 months.

Cookies

SongChute uses cookies that are needed to sign you in and keep your session secure, and stores some preferences (such as display settings) in your browser. We do not use advertising cookies.

Your choices and rights

You can see and change your account details in your settings, and delete your account at any time. You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask questions about this policy by emailing support@songchute.com. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Children

SongChute is not meant for children under 16 without a parent or guardian's consent. If you believe a child has given us information without consent, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We protect your information with encrypted connections, scrambled passwords, private file storage and limited access. No service is perfectly secure; if a breach affects you, we will tell you as the law requires.

Changes

We will post any changes here and tell you about significant ones by email or in the app.
